MITIG-WAAKII (Forestry) The Forest Unit was established within the Union of Ontario Indians in June of 2003 and currently is staffed with a Forestry Coordinator and Administrative Assistant. The goal of the forest unit is to improve communication, dialogue, and relations between the Anishinabek Nation and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). The forest unit working area encompasses the traditional territory of the 40 member communities of the Anishinabek Nation.
Purpose: The purpose of the Forest Unit is to provide an opportunity for Anishinabek First Nations and the MNR to discuss forest planning and management issues, exchange information, facilitate a common understanding and collaborate on the resolution issues. The intent of the parties in creating the Forest Unit is to provide First Nations with a formal, common table through which priority matters within the following broad themes may be negotiated: · Relationship Building · Communication/Consultation and Engagement with Industry · Economic Benefits/Resource Revenue Sharing · Involvement in Forest Management · Involvement in Policy and Program · Forestry Framework Agreement Subsequently, additional themes such as Implementation and Future Discussions have been identified to achieve a “solutions-based approach” to establish a structure by which Anishinabek First Nations will participate with a greater share in tangible opportunities and economic benefits within the Forest Sector. Current Initiatives: · Forestry Framework Agreement Process · Tenure Review · Biofibre Fore more infiormation on Current Initiatives please see attached documents below.
