The Anishinabek Nation recognizes each First Nation’s right to governance, including ratification by each individual community through the development of their own community constitutions.

The Anishinaabe Chi-Naaknigewin forms the Traditional Government of the Anishinabek Nation and reflects the authority of the Anishinabek Peoples to govern themselves.

Our Traditional Government

The Anishinaabe Chi-Naaknigewin is proclaimed by the Peoples identifying as the Anishinabek Nation who, in exercising their Sovereign, Inherent and Treaty Rights, establish and empower the Anishinabek Nation Government as their Traditional Government.

It provides a foundation for governance rooted in Anishinaabe law, values, responsibilities and the collective rights of the Anishinabek.

Protecting Anishinaabe culture and ways of life

The Anishinabek Nation has the inherent right bestowed upon it by the Creator to enact laws necessary to protect and preserve Anishinaabe culture, languages, customs, traditions and practices for the betterment of the Anishinabek.

The Grand Council enacts Rules of Procedure to govern the Grand Council, and the Anishinabek Nation Government administers those rules.

The Anishinaabe Chi-Naaknigewin reflects a governance system rooted in Anishinaabe identity, law, ceremony and collective responsibility, while respecting the inherent right of each First Nation to govern itself.
