ANISHINABEK NATION HEAD OFFICE (July 26, 2018)— On behalf of the Anishinabek Nation, Grand Council Chief Glen Hare congratulates Perry Bellegarde on his re-election as National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

“Congratulations to Perry Bellegarde on his re-election. His experience from his long political career will continue to serve our people well when it comes to defending the rights of our citizens, especially in the areas of housing, health care, and resource access. I look forward to seeing his efforts in closing the gap come to fruition,” stated Grand Council Chief Hare.

Perry Bellegarde was re-elected on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 in Vancouver, B.C., to a second term as National Chief with a final vote count of 328 out of 522 votes, securing the 60 percent mandated votes to win.

Chief Bellegarde is from Little Black Bear First Nation in Treaty 4 territory in Saskatchewan where he served as Chief. He has also served as Grand Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

The Anishinabek Nation is the political advocate for 40 member communities across Ontario, representing approximately 60,000 people. The Anishinabek Nation is the oldest political organization in Ontario and can trace its roots back to the Confederacy of Three Fires, which existed long before European contact.
